Introduction
This is a once in a lifetime deal. You normally don’t see a real Ford GT40 for sale. All the GT40s up for sale are either kit cars or replicas. Or they could be from the 2005 and above GT40s. They are without any actual race or motorsport history.
Ford GT40 for sale
The following car is listed in hemmings.com website. You can checkout the original listing here. Since this is a very special listing, I am promoting here for free. There is hardly any real GT40s for sale in the market. That too a Mk IV J10 chases is the rarest of all cars.
But this rare gem is listed by F40 Motorsport in Connecticut.
The Chassis
This car has the J10 version of the chassis. It is very similar to the ones that dethroned Ferrari in 1967 Le Man racing. Also, it sports the almost identical read and white livery. The J10 chassis had a a very different life than J10 chassis. Amazingly this chassis bore completely different bodyworks on various Le Mans and other races.
This J10 was built in 1967, but it never raced until 1969. . Initially, it entered the Can-Am series wearing open bodywork. Apparently, it resembled competitors from McLaren and Chaparral of the same race era. This was campaigned by the Agapiou Brothers racing team. Originally founded by Charles Agapiou, the chief mechanic for Shelby American in the GT40 days. J10 chassis built cars were raced by legends like George Folmer, David Hobbs, Peter Revson, Jack Brabham, and Vic Elford. Though, its primary driver was Canadian John Cannon.
Can-Am race history
Agapiou’s Mk IV didn’t find much success in Can-Am races. Unfortunately it had to run against the McLarens which was virtually unbeatable at that era. In fact, Agapiou’s MK IV finished only one race. It was at the Can-Am round at Fuji Speedway in Japan. In this race Cannon claimed a respectable 2nd place. Afterwards, a series of crashes in 1970s caused some of the cars to be scrapped. The surviving part of the tub was rebuilt in the late Eighties. In the Nineties, J10 was given Le Mans bodywork, and a full restoration of the car was completed in 2017.
Ford GT40 for sale: 1/10 surviving chassis
This Ford GT40 for sale is a very rare gem. It is only one of the 10 surviving chassis built as a complete Le Mans car.
Ford GT40 Power Train
This car is powered by a 427-ci V-8 engine. Apparently, it produces around 500 horsepower to the rear wheels. It also has a four-speed trans-axle built by Ford. F40 Motorsports is asking just under $2 million for this car. Apparanetly, a similar car with J12 chassis was sold close the same price in 2018. Details of that sale is available here “the 2018 selling price of Mk IV chassis J12“. Whoever wants to add another rare car to their collection should definitely buy this. Otherwise, anybody who has $2 million in spare to buy a real race car to go around race track can consider as well.
